Women's golf places sixth in the NESCAC

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates women's golf team took eighth place out of 10 teams at the two-day Middlebury Invitational, simultaneously finishing sixth in the conference in the 2012 NESCAC Women's Golf Invitational.

The NESCAC event was held in conjunction with the Middlebury Invitational at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course (par 71 - 5,801 yards).

Bates' team score of 896 put the Bobcats well ahead of ninth-place Union (1,049) and Westfield State (1,072), and sixth among the six NESCAC squads.

Bates first-year Elizabeth LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.) shot an even 100 on Sunday, following Saturday's 101 for a 201, good for 31st place among 50 golfers overall. First-year Jessica Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot a 221 for 37th place, followed by junior Jordan Banez (Fredericksburg, Va.) at 222 and junior Jennalee Kulig (East Granby, Conn.) at 267.

Williams won the tournament at 651, led by medalist Georgiana Salant's 153. Middlebury came second at 663, followed by Vassar (693), Amherst (694), Bowdoin (799), Hamilton (811), Mount Holyoke (816), Bates, Union and Westfield State.

The Bates women wrap up their season next Saturday and Sunday at the Williams Fall Classic in Williamstown, Mass.
