LaVerghetta, Centanni lead women's golf in season debut

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore Liz LaVerghetta broke up Bowdoin's hold on the top places on Saturday, as the Bates women's golf team opened the 2013 fall season with a loss to the Polar Bears at Brunswick Golf Club. The Polar Bears and Bobcats played an 18-hole dual match with Bowdoin carding a top-four team score of 357 to 411 for Bates. 

Kendall Kyritz of Bowdoin was the medalist with an 84 to lead all players. The Polar Bears posted the top three scorers of the day as Ursula Munger (89) and Taylor Giuffre (89) tied for second place individually. Emily Quirk (95) rounded out the Polar Bear scorers. 

LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.) placed fourth among 12 competitors with a 92.

First-year Sarah Centanni (Hingham, Mass.) made a strong debut, placing sixth overall at 99. Senior Jordan Banez (Fredericksburg, Va.) and first-year Emily Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for eighth at 110 to round out the scoring.

The Bobcats will travel to South Hadley, Mass., next weekend to compete at the Mount Holyoke Invitational.
