BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bates senior captain Garrett Johnson is tied for eighth place at the end of the first day of competition at the NESCAC Men's Golf Fall Qualifier, held Sept. 28-29 at Brunswick Golf Course.
The Bobcats sit in ninth place in the team standings, well ahead of 10th-place Wesleyan with a four-player combined score of 328. Colby and Hamilton are tied for seventh place, just five strokes ahead of the Bobcats.
Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) shot a 76 Saturday and sits in a seven-way tie for eighth place among 50 players.
Junior Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) recorded Bates' second-best score of the day, shooting an 83 for sole possession of 35th place. First-year players Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) and Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) turned in an 84 and 85, respectively, while senior Aidan Schmidtberger (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) was right behind at 86.
Middlebury leads the tournament at 292, followed by Trinity at 306. The team winner following tomorrow's results will host the NESCAC Golf Championship on April 26-27. The top four teams will qualify for the championship.
