BREWSTER, Mass. -- The Bates men's golf team rose one place in Monday's action at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships, to finish in 33rd place among 38 teams overall.
The 79th annual NEIGA Championship took place at The Captains Course on Sunday and Monday, with the Bobcats recording the 17th-best score among 22 Division III squads.
Central Connecticut State won the team title with a two-day score of 597, just 21 over par. Western New England University was the top Division III team, placing fourth overall at 616, three strokes ahead of Husson.
First-year Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) capped his impressive rookie season by leading the Bobcats with a two-day score of 161, or 17 over par. Rutkin was tied for 86th place with his first-day score of 81, and he fired an 80 on Monday to rise to a tie for 74th in the individual rankings among 189 players.
Captain Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) finished up his strong senior season with an 82 on Sunday and an 80 on Monday, tying for 81st at 162. First-year Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) shot a two-day total of 175, tying for 158th, and seniors Aidan Schmidtberger (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) and Zachary Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) punched in at 187 and 192, respectively.
