BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team finished off one of its best performances in years on Sunday, claiming fourth place out of 12 teams at the Bowdoin Invitational by a margin of 10 strokes ahead of fifth-place Saint Anselm. One year ago, Bates placed 12th among 13 teams at the same event.

Three out of four scoring Bobcat players cooled off from Saturday's blazing first-round scores, but the Bobcats still finished 10 strokes ahead of Division II St. Anselm, the fifth-place team, 635 to 645. Only Middlebury (601), Endicott (606) and Providence (606) outscored Bates. Finishing in sixth through 12th places were Southern Maine (648), Husson (653), Tufts (660), Bowdoin (661), St. Joseph's (670), Colby (670) and UMaine-Farmington (697).

Sophomore Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) followed his first-day 77 with an 81 on Sunday at the par-72 Brunswick Golf Course, in a four-way tie for 16th place among 64 players overall. Right behind him was sophomore Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.), who followed his 77 with an 82 on Sunday to tie for 20th place.

Senior captain Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) led Bates on Sunday with a 76, the 10th-best second-day score in the field, following Saturday's 84 for a two-day score of 160, tying him for 23rd place overall. And sophomore Tom Garone (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) followed Saturday's 75 with an 88 on Sunday to tie for 29th place, rounding out Bates' scoring. First-year Edmund Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) carded an 83, improving on the 87 he shot in his collegiate debut.

The Bates men's team competes at the UMF Invitational on Thursday at Sunday River Golf Course, then plays in the Maine State Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. The Bates women's team opens its season with a dual match at Bowdoin next weekend.
