Men's golf sixth at UMF Invitational

NEWRY, Maine -- First-year Jay Bennett-Saltzman finished sixth to pace the Bates men's golf team to sixth place out of eight teams on Thursday at the UMF Invitational.

Making his college golf debut, Bennett-Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) took 78 strokes to complete the par-72, 6,558-yard Sunday River Golf Club, placing sixth overall among 39 players. 

Sophomore Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) carded an 82 to tie for 10th place. First-year Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) scored an 84 to tie for 16th, and sophomore Sam Mellert (Hanover, N.H.) rounded out the scoring in 37th place, at 105.

The Bobcats will compete in the Maine State Championships Saturday and Sunday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.
