Rutkin, Stekler lead men's golf to third place at Maine championship

BANGOR, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team submitted a second straight impressive weekend, finishing third among 11 teams on Sunday in the two-day Maine Intercollegiate Men's Golf Championship at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Husson won the team title with an aggregate four-player, two-day score of 597, led by medalist Greg Martin, who shot a 3-under-par 139. Southern Maine was the runner-up at 616, just three strokes ahead of Bates (619). Trailing the Bobcats were the University of New England (623), Maine Maritime (629), Colby (645), UMaine-Presque Isle (646), Bowdoin (649), St. Joseph's (656), UMaine-Farmington (663) and Eastern Maine Community College (697).

Sophomores Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) were both in a three-way tie for 10th place, along with UNE's Jared Melman, giving each player the the final All-State honorees in the tournament. It is the second straight All-State outing for Rutkin, who also tied for 10th place a year ago. Rutkin shot a first-day 78 and followed it with the team's best round of the tournament, a four-over-par 75, on Sunday. Stekler was more consistent, with a 77 followed by a 76.

Bates finished in fifth place at the same tournament a year ago.

Senior captain Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) tied with three other players for 14th place among 54 overall at 155, and sophomore Tom Garone (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) tied for 20th place at 158. First-year Bennett Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) was out of the team scoring at 166, tying for 34th place individually.

Bates next returns to Bangor to play at Husson on Saturday, Sept. 20.
