BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bates first-year student Kelly Wassarman took third place overall and led the Bobcats women's golf team in its 2014 season debut Sunday, concluding a two-day dual match against Bowdoin at Brunswick Golf Club.
Led by the top two finishers Kendall Kyritz and Ursula Munger, the Polar Bears totaled a two-day team score of 746. Bates finished with a two-day team score of 786.
Wassarman (Middleton, Wis.) shot a 95 in the first round on Saturday, the third best score on the day. She followed that with a 91 on Sunday, tying Munger for the second-best round in the field behind Kyritz's 89.
Bates junior Elizabeth LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.) tied Bowdoin's Meredith Sullivan for fourth place at 194. Sophomore Emily Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for sixth place with Bowdoin's Haley Friesch at 195, on the strength of her second-day 94. Sophomore Sarah Centanni (Hingham, Mass.) placed eighth, at 211, to round out Bates' team scoring.
Both Bates and Bowdoin travel to South Hadley, Mass., next weekend for the Mt. Holyoke Invitational at Orchards Golf Club.
