Men's golf ties for 16th place at 80th NEIGA Championship

BREWSTER, Mass. -- The Bates men's golf team tied for 16th place among 22 Division III teams, as the 80th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship concluded at The Captains Course on Monday.

After entering the second day of the tournament in 17th place, the Bobcats moved up a spot, tying with Southern Maine with a two-day, four-man aggregate score of 679.

Sophomore Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) and first-year Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) both shot 12-over-par 84's on Monday. Sophomore Tom Garone (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) followed his first-day 84 with an 85, tying Stekler for the team's best total score at 169, amid a five-way tie for 61st place among 107 players. Sophomore Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) shot an 87 on Monday and was one stroke behind Garone and Stekler in overall scoring, at 170. Marcus carded a 171 to round out the team's scoring. 

Senior captain Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) shot his second straight 88 to finish tied for 84th place in his final tournament playing for Bates.
