Rutkin all-state a third straight year for men's golf at state championships

POLAND, Maine -- Junior captain Brad Rutkin earned all-state honors for the third consecutive year for his top-10 finish, leading the Bates College men's golf team to seventh place out of 11 teams at the two-day Maine Intercollegiate Championship.

Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) shot a two-day total of 155, tying with Colby's Geoff Sullivan and Bowdoin's Thomas Spangnola for 10th place out of 55 individuals at the tournament. Rutkin shot a two-over-par 72 on Saturday and followed with an 81 on Sunday. Rutkin has tied for 10th place in all three years he has competed in the tournament.

Sophomore Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) was second among the Bobcats, tying for 17th place at 158 with a pair of 79's. Junior captain Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) tied for 21st place at 159 and sophomore Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) tied for 34th at 166.

Bates' four-man, two-day score added up to 637, just two strokes behind both UMaine-Farmington and Maine Maritime Academy, who tied for fifth place. Eighth-place Bowdoin trailed Bates by 17 strokes.

The Bates men next compete at the Husson Invitational on Sept. 26-27.
