LEEDS, Maine -- Junior Matt Marcus earned all-state honors for the first time in his career as the Bates men's golf team finished the Maine State Men's Championship in sixth place out of 10 teams Sunday at Springbrook Golf Club.

Marcus (Newton, Mass.) shot a 76 Saturday, tying for ninth place after one day. His 77 on Sunday gave him a two-day score of 153, 11 over par, tying three other players for seventh place among 50 individuals.

Bates' two-day, four-player aggregate score of 631 put the Bobcats four strokes behind fifth-place Bowdoin and three strokes ahead of seventh-place Colby. The Bobcats stood in third place after the first day with a team score of 310, but Sunday's 321 dropped them three places down. St. Joseph's (604) edged Husson (606) for the team title.

Sophomore Joey Sallerson (Chicago, Ill.) was tied with Marcus for ninth place after his 76 on Saturday. Sallerson followed with an 80 to tie for 14th place.

First-year Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) fired a 74 on the first day, tying for fourth place. He shot an 84 on Sunday, finishing in a tie for 22nd place.

Senior captain Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) rounded out Bates' scoring at 164, including an 80 on Sunday.

Bates will next compete Sept. 24-25 at the Husson Invitational at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, Maine.
