NORWALK, Conn. -- Bates College senior Zak Ray has been selected a preseason Honorable Mention All-America player by D3Hoops.com, the website announced on Wednesday.

Ray, a 5-11 point guard from Bangor, Maine, is one of 25 men's basketball players in Division III to receive preseason All-America honors, and the only player from the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Ray averaged 12.4 points, 5.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game last season, as the Bobcats won a school record 20 games and lost only six. He is a two-time All-NESCAC selection and was Co-Rookie of the Year as a freshman. He is a two-time D3Hoops.com All-Northeast Region selection.

Ray is seven steals away from tying Sean McDonagh's school career record of 184, and 105 assists away from Herb Taylor's career assists record of 498. With 859 career points, Ray is also poised to become the 27th Bobcat to reach the 1,000-points plateau.

The Bobcats open their 2006-07 season on Friday, Nov. 17 at the Williams Invitational, facing Western New England College at 6 p.m. at Williams College.
