WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Bryan Wholey scored 18 points to lead the Bates College men's basketball team to a 69-53 victory over CCNY on Saturday at the CUA Classic at Catholic University.
Bates (5-3) notched its fifth consecutive win and will play in the tournament championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m. against tournament host Catholic (6-5). CCNY (1-12) will play in the consolation game Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats seized control of the game in the second half, as the Beavers stayed within striking distance all through the first period, never trailing by more than eight points.
After a jumper by Taleek Norman narrowed the gap to 42-38 with 17:04 left to play in the game, Bates began a 19-2 run over a span of 8 minutes and 13 seconds for a 61-40 lead with 8:51 to play. Sophomore Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) scored seven points and Wholey added six over that span.
In just 21 minutes of action, Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) shot 8-for-15 from the floor and collected three steals, three assists and four rebounds. Wilson finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists, and sophomore Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Taleek Norman scored 17 points with six rebounds for the Beavers, while Uladipupo Usindero had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Xavier Gonzalez also netted 10 points.
Bates took great care of the ball, committing only nine turnovers, and played stifling defense, holding the Beavers to 33.9 percent shooting and forcing 15 turnovers.
