Creahan nets career high in loss at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates College men's basketball team dropped a 76-61 decision at Williams College on Saturday despite a career-high 10 points from junior guard Neil Creahan (Hingham, Mass.)

Joe Geoghegan led the Ephs (12-5, 2-0 NESCAC) with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while Kevin Snyder added 13 and 9. Blake Schultz chipped in with 14 points for the hosts.

Junior Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) scored a team-high 11 points for Bates (8-7, 0-2 NESCAC), with Creahan and sophomore Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) adding 10 apiece. Sophomore Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) gathered a team-high 7 rebounds and first-year Kyle Philbrook (Auburn, Maine) led the team with 4 assists.

The Ephs played excellent defense and responded to a physical Bobcat lineup by getting to the free throw line for 28 points on the game, compared to just 10 free throws out of 14 attempts for the Bobcats.

The Bates bench was productive, outscoring its Williams counterparts 33-19, but Williams had the edge in points off turnovers (15-8) and second-chance points (13-5).

Early in the game, though, everything seemed to be going the Bobcats way. After a driving fadeaway from senior Ben Thayer (Gorham, Maine) put Bates up 17-12, the co-captain followed that by swishing a 17-footer at the end of the shot clock for a 19-13 lead. First-year John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) maintained Bates' game-high six-point lead with a bucket on the Bobcats' next possession.

Williams responded with a 22-9 run for a 35-28 lead at the half.

The Ephs opened up the half on a 17-4 run, culminating in a Kevin Snyder three-pointer and a 52-34 Williams lead.  Though the Bobcats were able to pull within 10 at one point, a 21-11 run left Williams up 22 points -- a margin that would prove insurmountable as the Ephs held on for a 76-61 victory.

Bates will return home next weekend to host Bowdoin on Friday at 7 p.m. and Colby on Saturday at 3 p.m.
