Bates wins Paul Bunyan Invitational by beating Husson







BANGOR, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team emerged from a close game at halftime to defeat host Husson University 75-63 Saturday in the championship game of the 42nd annual Paul Bunyan Invitational.

Senior Chris Wilson, from neighboring Brewer, Maine, scored a season-high 21 points to go with seven assists to pace the Bobcats (5-2). Junior Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) scored 19 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and sophomore Ryan Weston had an impressive second collegiate game in front in his hometown of Bangor, collecting 10 points and seven rebounds. Wilson was named the tournament MVP, while Ellis was also named to the all-tournament team.

Husson led 31-30 at intermission after a back-and-forth first half that included eight ties and four lead changes. Ellis had 10 points and four rebounds to lead Bates in the period.

The Bobcats outscored the Eagles (3-3) 21-4 over the opening 8 minutes and 16 seconds of the second half to gain control of the game with a 51-35 lead. Ellis started the run off with a three-point play and added another hoop minutes later, and Wilson finished off the run with a three-pointer with 11:44 left in the game. Weston scored four points in the decisive spurt.

Bates held off Husson from there, never allowing the Eagles closer than eight points.

Other Bobcats playing a large role in the win included sophomore Kyle Philbrook (Auburn, Maine), who had seven points, four assists and four steals, senior Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.), who had six points and five rebounds, and junior Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.), who added four points and five rebounds.

The Bobcats are off until they travel to Irvine, Calif., for the Surf City Classic at Concordia University. Bates will play Ripon on Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. Pacific time, then will take on Division II Concordia the following day at the same time.
