IRVINE, Calif. -- The Bates College men's basketball team fell 71-63 to Ripon College Tuesday night in the Bobcats' first game of the Surf City Classic, held at Concordia University.

The Bobcats (5-3) outrebounded the Red Hawks (6-1) 45-37, aided by a career-high 14 boards by senior Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.), who also contributed 15 points for his first double-double this season. Junior Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) grabbed 11 rebounds but was held to four points on 1-10 shooting.

Senior guard Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) tied O'Keefe for the team scoring lead with 15 points and added five assists, tying sophomore Kyle Philbrook (Auburn, Maine) for the team high in that category. Sophomore Ryan Weston (Bangor, Maine) scored 11 points on 5-6 shooting and senior Marshall Hatch (Chicago, Ill.) added 10 points off the bench for Bates.

Scott Gillespie and Aris Wurtz combined to score 48 points for Ripon, with Gillespie pouring in 28 points. They were the only two Red Hawks to score in double figures.

Ripon jumped out to an early 15-5 lead after Gillespie hit his only three-pointer of the game with 11:49 left in the first half. Bates clawed back into the lead at 18-17 with 5:51 left, after a Wilson three and a pair of hoops by Weston. Ripon finished the half with four straight points for a 30-24 halftime lead.

Ripon held onto a single-digit lead throughout the second half. Bates cut the deficit as low as one point at 45-44 on an O'Keefe basket and 57-56 on a hoop by sophomore John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.), and finally at 59-58 with 2:36 left after an O'Keefe jumper.
