Men's basketball tipped in overtime at Colby, 66-61







WATERVILLE, Maine -- Adam Choice scored 27 points and Mike Russell added a double-double to lead Colby College to a 66-61 overtime victory over the Bates College men's basketball team on Saturday, in the teams' yearly non-conference matchup.

Bates senior Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) led the Bobcats (6-5) in scoring with 11 points, to go along with six rebounds. Three other players added nine points apiece: junior Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.), senior Marshall Hatch (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.). Junior Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) added six points with a team-high eight rebounds, and senior Sean Wirth (Barrington, R.I.) also scored six points.

Choice scored six of his points in overtime and Christian Van Loenen went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the extra session.

The Mules improve to 9-2 overall, while Bates falls to 6-5. The game did not count in the New England Small College Athletic Conference standings. The teams will meet later in the season at Bates in the league contest.

Choice was 10-for-11 from the foul line and added six rebounds and three blocked shots. Van Loenen was 5-for-5 from the foul line on the way to nine points and three assists. Russell had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Colby held a 52-49 lead after Choice nailed two free throws with 2:26 to play, but Bates scored the final three points of regulation and kept the Mules scoreless to send the game to overtime. First-year Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) hit two free throws with 1:22 to play and Ellis was 1-for-2 from the foul line with 32 seconds left for the Bobcats’ final three points of regulation.

After the teams traded baskets to start the overtime, Colby used a 4-0 run on two straight buckets by Choice to take the lead for good. Bates got as close as 60-58 when Squires hit a jumper with 37 seconds left, but Colby went 6-for-8 from the foul line after that to pull out the win.
