IRVINE, Calif. -- The Bates College men's basketball team fell to NAIA powerhouse Concordia University Irvine on Wednesday night, as the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Eagles extended their record to 12-0 with a 91-58 decision in the Bobcats' final game in the Surf City Classic.

Concordia hit 11 of 20 three-point attempts in the game and has now won 50 of its past 53 home games at CU Arena.

Bates (5-4) shot 50 percent (10-for-20) from the field in the first half, staying in the game at the break with a 40-28 deficit.

Sixteen Bobcats saw playing time in the game, led by three players who scored in double figures: junior Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) scored 12 points with eight rebounds, while junior Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) added 10 points apiece. Wilson was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Senior Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with six points, and sophomore Kyle Philbrook (Auburn, Maine) dished out a team-high four assists. First-year Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with six points.

Junior guards Justin Johnson and A.J. Gasporra scored 18 points apiece for Concordia, as Gasporra hit a team-high four treys on just five attempts on the evening.

Junior center Ben Smith scored 16 points and hit his only two three-point attempts, while senior guard Terrence Worthy and sophomore guard Austin Simon scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Worthy dished out a game-high five assists.

Bates grabbed an early lead when Wilson hit a triple to make it a 5-2 game, but Johnson and sophomore forward Cameron Gliddon notched back-to-back layups to give CUI a 6-5 lead, and Worthy and Simon sunk consecutive triples to make it a 12-6 Eagles lead 4:15 into the game.

The Eagles picked up their first double-digit lead at 25-15 on a Simon three-point bucket with nine minutes on the first-half clock, and Gasporra dropped a three-pointer to make it an 18-point lead at 33-15 to cap off an 11-0 rally.

Bates answered with an 11-2 run of its own to shave the CUI lead to nine points at 3:32, and only trailed by 12 points at the half, at 40-28, thanks to some gritty play by Wilson and O'Keefe.

It was all Eagles in the second half, as CUI outscored Bates by a 51-30 margin, holding the Bobcats to just 36 percent shooting (10-for-28), while converting on 62 percent (18-for-29) of its chances in the final 20 minutes.
