No. 20 Brandeis pulls away from men's basketball team

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates College men's basketball team held its own with No. 20 nationally ranked Brandeis University in the second half before the host Judges took over in the second half for an 81-57 non-conference victory at Red Auerbach Arena on Tuesday night.

Bates (6-6) shot 12-for-19 (.632) from the field in the first half, including a 4-for-4 effort by junior Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) and a 3-for-3 showing by junior Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.), and the Bobcats led by as many as 10 points, at 29-19 with 5:12 left in the period on a pair of free throws by Ellis. But the Judges (9-2) finished out the rest of the period with a 16-2 run for a 35-31 lead at the half.

Bates' drought continued as the second half began, and Brandeis assumed a 48-33 advantage inside the first five minutes of the period. A pair of free throws by senior Sean Wirth (Barrington, R.I.) and a jumper by junior Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) closed the game to 48-37 with 14:17 left, but that was as close as the Bobcats would get the rest of the way. Brandeis led by as many as 27 points down the stretch before the clock ran out on an 81-57 verdict.

Vytas Kriskus led the Judges with 19 points, while Tyrone Hughes and Kenny Small contributed 16 points apiece, with Small hitting 10 of 11 free throws and Hughes adding in a game-high seven assists and four steals.

Ellis led the Bobcats with 18 points and six rebounds, while Schmiemann added 13 points, including 2-of-3 shooting behind the arc. Senior Marshall Hatch (Chicago, Ill.) dished out a team-high three assists
