Men's basketball set for Rutgers-Newark on New Year's Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bates College men's basketball team plays its first game in 23 days on New Year's Day, as the Bobcats take on Rutgers-Newark at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Naismith Classic at Springfield College.

The Bobcats (7-2) will take on the Raiders (9-1), with the winner to play for the tournament championship on Sunday against either Roger Williams or host Springfield. Bates' last game was a 68-66 loss to Husson, which ended a five-game winning streak.

The Bobcats last participated in the tournament in 2009, and won it with victories over Castleton and Becker.
