Christian's 30 points propel men's hoops at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bates senior captain Reid Christian exploded for a career-high 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bates men's basketball team to a 74-54 win at the University of New England on Tuesday night.

Christian (Pownal, Maine) became the first Bobcat to hit the 30-point mark since Brian Ellis '11 netted 33 points on Nov. 23, 2010 against Southern Maine. It is only the third 30-point game by a Bobcat within the past nine seasons.

Christian's previous career highs were 17 points (scored at Bowdoin on Jan. 22, 2011) and seven rebounds (collected Nov. 22, 2011 at Southern Maine).

Christian accounted for half of Bates' offense in the second half, scoring 20 points -- the majority coming on a trio of makes from long distance and seven free throws. For the game, he converted 10 of 12 tries at the charity stripe, both career-high numbers.

Senior John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) added 12 points and six rebounds for Bates, which out-rebounded UNE by a 41-29 margin. Junior Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) chipped in with seven points apiece.

For the Nor'easters, Alex Alsadi notched a team-high 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from both the floor and the line, and also had five rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Jarryd Rossignol contributed 10 points off the bench.

Bates scored the initial eight points of the game and led 15-7 midway through the opening frame. UNE responded with nine straight in a span of 2:32 to go up by one (16-15) with just under seven minutes left in the half.

From there, the visitors put 19 of the next 22 points up on the board to assume a 34-19 advantage at the break. The Bobcats connected on 52 percent (13-for-25) of their shot attempts in the stanza, while the Nor'easters struggled to just an 18 percent (5-for-28) clip.

Bates built the difference up to as many as 25 (54-29) in the second period, before the teams settled on the 20-point margin in the end.

Bates begins NESCAC conference play this weekend, with a Friday 8pm game at the top-ranked team in Division III, Middlebury (live stats / webcast), followed by a 4pm game at Williams on Saturday (live stats / webcast).
