LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's basketball team overcame a 32-27 halftime deficit by outscoring Colby 39-23 in the second half for a 66-55 victory on Friday night, the Bobcats' first NESCAC win of the season.

Bates (7-6, 1-2 NESCAC) received career highs of 17 points and 20 rebounds from senior John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.), eclipsing his previous career bests of 16 points and 12 boards. Ed Bogdanovich overcame an uneventful first half with 12 points and four boards in the second half, to finish with 14 points and seven caroms. Junior Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Reid Christian (Pownal, Maine) added 13 and 11 points, respectively, with nine of Christian's points coming in the second half.

Shane Rogers led the Mules (4-9, 0-2 NESCAC) with 13 points, with Connor O'Neil and Eric Beaulieu adding 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Colby managed just four points over the first 9 1/2 minutes of the second half, allowing Bates to take over the lead for good at 36-34 with 14:32 left, then extend the advantage to 47-36 with 11:07 left on a rebound and coast-to-coast layup by Brust. Alex Swanson made a three to cut it to 47-39, but Bates senior Will Furbush (South Portland, Maine) answered with a three of his own to quickly bump the lead back to 11.

Christian closed out the game with a three to make it 60-47, followed by a four-point play with 1:36 remaining that bumped Bates' lead back into double digits, at 64-52, after Colby had cut the deficit to eight, 60-52, with 2:08 left on a layup by Beaulieu and a three by O'Neil.

The first half was all Squires on Bates' side; the senior posted 12 points and eight boards over the opening stanza, almost single-handedly keeping the Bobcats in the game. Colby cashed in on six three-pointers in the opening half, with O'Neil shooting 3-for-4 behind the arc for a team-high nine points to go with three assists. Kyle Donovan, who finished with a team-high nine rebounds, added seven points and six boards in the period.
