LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior forward John Squires earned his second Maine Player of the Week honors of the season on Tuesday, announced by the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.
Two weeks after receiving the same honor, Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) shared Co-Player of the Week honors this week with Southern Maine senior Jeremy Jackson.
Squires posted impressive averages of 17.0 points and 17.5 rebounds over two tough road losses last week. The 6-8 forward had his best outing in a 78-75 setback at Husson, when he totaled 22 points, 19 boards, four assists, two steals, and two blocks, and shot 62 percent (8-for-13) from the floor. Squires then had a 12-point, 16-rebound performance at Tufts, his eighth double-double this season and his fifth in the past six games, where the Bobcats fell 67-62 in a matchup of the NESCAC's two third-place teams.
Squires has climbed into second place among NESCAC conference leaders in rebounding, first on the offensive boards (3.89 per game). He's also currently among conference leaders in scoring (11.9 ppg, 14th) and blocked shots (0.89, sixth).
In the weekly Top 5 state poll, Bates (10-8) fell from first to third place in the wake of the Bobcats' two losses. View this week's MMBCWA report.
