HADLEY, Mass. -- Senior forward John Squires was named Maine State Player of the Week on Wednesday from the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches Association, two days after receiving the same honor from the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Squires led Bates to its 57-54 victory at Tufts in Saturday's conference quarterfinals.
Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) tied his career high with 25 points, shooting 12-of-21 from the field, and he grabbed 13 rebounds to propel Bates into the NESCAC semifinals for the second time in three years. Crucially, the Bobcats outrebounded the Jumbos 39-28 in the contest.
Squires also led the Bobcats with 15 points and seven rebounds in their 76-49 win over St. Joseph's College of Maine in his home finale. Bates assumed the No. 1 ranking in the MMBCWA's weekly Top 5 poll, a point ahead of Bowdoin.
The 6-foot-8 Squires also had a standout senior season on the Bates football team, earning First Team All-NESCAC honors at wide receiver.
It is the first NESCAC Player of the Week award for Squires, and now his fourth Player of the Week award overall: Squires has earned state POTW honors from the MMBCWA on three occasions this year.
Squires is also the second Bobcat to receive NESCAC Player of the Week honors this season -- sophomore guard Luke Matarazzo (Shelton, Conn.) snagged the award on Jan. 23.
Squires currently leads the Bobcats in scoring (13.4 points per game) and rebounding (9.4 rpg), and ranks 11th and third in those categories, respectively, in the NESCAC. He finished the regular season as the NESCAC's leading rebounder in conference games, at 10.7 per game, including a hefty 0.8-rebound lead over the closest other player in the league in offensive boards.
The fifth-seeded Bobcats (13-12) will play at top-seeded Amherst's (23-2) LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday at 5:30pm in the first game of the NESCAC Championship semifinals doubleheader.
