Brent Morin '08
LEWISTON, Maine -- Brent Morin scored the game-winning goal with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter as the Bates College men's lacrosse team held off Colby College 6-5 Thursday evening at Campus Avenue Field.
Bates moves to 5-4 overall, 2-4 in NESCAC play, while the White Mules drop to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Morin (Hanover, N.H.) charged down the middle after Bates was awarded possession on a Colby foul, and he fired a shot from the top of the crease that beat Colby sophomore goalkeeper Alex Farmer (Madison, Conn.). First-year P.J. Arroyo (Charlestown, Mass.) won the ensuing faceoff, his 10th out of 16 in the game, and the Bobcats maintained possession the rest of the way, aided by a dual penalty call against the Mules that gave Bates a two-man advantage over the final 43 seconds of the game.
Colby sophomore Caddy Brooks (Darien, Conn.) scored the Mules' final three goals and added one assist, while junior Drew Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) scored Colby's first two goals. Farmer made 10 saves for Colby.
Morin's game-winning goal was his second of the game. First-year Tyler Moore (North Andover, Mass.) added a pair of goals, and junior Mike Medeiros (Concord, Mass.) and senior Amadi Cisse (Hanover, N.H.) also scored. Junior Craig Blake (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) assisted on two scores for Bates.
In his first career start, junior Will Paddock (Denver, Colo.) played a spectacular game in goal for Bates, with 17 saves.
The teams were never separated by more than one goal in the contest. A pair of Piekarski goals bookended scores by Morin and Moore in the first half for a 2-2 tie. Moore and Brooks traded goals to retie the game at 3-3, before Cisse converted a Blake feed with 11.6 seconds left in the half to put the Bobcats on top 4-3 at the break.
Brooks single-handedly outscored Bates 2-0 in the third quarter with a pair of unassisted goals, giving Colby a 5-4 lead heading into the final quarter. The Mules outshot the Bobcats in the third quarter by a 14-4 margin.
But Bates turned the tide, outshooting Colby 12-5 in the fourth quarter. Medeiros tied the game at 5-5 with 11:28 left in the game, assisted by first-year Sam Geller (Berkeley, Calif.), and teams stayed scoreless for eight minutes before Morin's game-winner.
Bates plays at Tufts on Saturday at 1 p.m.
