LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College defeated the University of Southern Maine 19-3 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Tuesday at Campus Avenue Field. The game was moved up from Wednesday to Tuesday due to forecasts of a storm.

Tyler Moore (North Andover, Mass.) and Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H.) led 12 Bobcats in the scoring column with three goals apiece. Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.), Alex Cronstein (New York, N.Y.) and Nathan Kellogg (Natick Mass.) added two goals apiece. Chris Cruise (Centerville, Mass.) and Les Wade (Randolph, N.J.) both recorded a pair of assists.

Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine) scored two goals and added an assist for the Huskies (1-1); Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine) also scored for USM and Thomas Boothby recorded an assist.

USM goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) recorded a number of outstanding saves, collecting 20 in all while facing 52 shots from Bates. He kept the Huskies competitive early on: Bates led after the first quarter 4-0 despite a 15-1 disparity in shots taken. Three Bates goalies -- Will Paddock (Denver, Colo.), Hunter Mulligan (Hunting Valley, Ohio) and first-year Peem Chatikavanij (Bangkok, Thailand) -- combined for six saves.

The Bobcats had a 52-16 advantage in shots, a 49-25 edge in ground balls, a 16-10 edge in faceoffs, and the Bobcats converted on a season-best 4 of 7 extra-man opportunities.

After Simon got the Bobcats on the scoreboard just 35 seconds into the game with an unassisted tally, Bates steadily built its lead to 8-0 with 8:56 left in the second quarter, with two Moore goals, one of them on a power play.

Gauthier got the Huskies on the board with 8:17 left in the second quarter, making it 8-1, and Gilbert answered Morin's second goal of the game with an unassisted tally to make it 9-2 with 1:03 left in the half. Nick Woods (Greenwich, Conn.) scored with 7 seconds left in the quarter to put Bates up 10-2 at the half.

Cronstein opened the third quarter with a goal from Sean O'Brien's (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) assist, and Bates increased the lead with a pair of man-up goals by Will Akie (Dedham, Mass.) and Simon. After Gilbert scored again for the Huskies to close it to 13-3 with 3;14 left in the third quarter, Kellogg fought for two consecutive unassisted goals to make it 15-3 at the start of the final quarter.

Bates will play host to Amherst College in a NESCAC matchup Saturday at 2 p.m.; Southern Maine plays at Curry College Friday at 3 p.m.
