WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College freshman goalkeeper Brett Becker made a season-high 19 saves and added a goal and an assist as the Fighting Scots defeated visiting Bates College, 8-6, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The two-goal victory for the Fighting Scots is just the second all-time against Bates and the first since March 26, 1997, when GC defeated the Bobcats 15-14 in overtime on the road; the Scots snapped a six-game losing streak.

The Fighting Scots (1-2) wasted little time getting on the board as freshman midfielder Jordan MacIntosh found the back of the net from sophomore defender James Blue, who picked up a ground ball following a successful clear to put the home team up 1-0 just 1:50 in to the contest. Less than a minute later MacIntosh helped out midfielder Dan Utz as Utz put the Scots up 2-0 on a shot from the left wing.

The Bobcats (0-4) were solid on clears and fired several quality shots on Becker, but the freshman keeper was true to the task each time. Following a GC clear and a timeout, the Fighting Scots put up another goal as midfielder Dan Castelline was credited with a goal as Bates keeper Will Paddock (Denver, Colo.) misfired into his own net. MacIntosh added his second goal of the game with just over a minute left in the first quarter to give the Fighting Scots a 4-0 cushion after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Becker took it upon himself to clear the ball from the GC end and continued into Bobcats territory, where he took an open shot and found the back of the cage for a 5-0 lead. The visitors broke the shutout with 10:42 to play in the half as junior midfielder Sean O’Brien (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) found senior attack Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H.) for Bates’ first tally. Each side added one more in the closing minutes of the half and the score read 6-2 in favor of the Scots at the intermission.

Bates opened the second half with a pair of goals as junior defender Matt Knortz (East Granby, Conn.) connected with junior attack Tyler Moore (North Andover, Mass.) with 10:04 to go, and less than 30 seconds later senior middie Craig Blake (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) found O’Brien to bring the visitors within two, 6-4.

With 8:15 to play, GC sophomore attack Andrew Kirkaldy came up with a ground ball and fired into the cage to give the Scots a 7-4 advantage. With 30 seconds to play in the third quarter the Bobcats took advantage of a man-up opportunity and Moore connected to make it 7-5 at the end of three.

In the fourth quarter, it took Blake just four seconds to bring the visitors within a goal, 7-6, as he took the ground ball off the face-off and sprinted through the defense for the unassisted tally. Despite four open looks, the Bobcats would not score again and Kirkaldy added a late goal on an assist from Becker to give GC their first win of the season, 8-6.

Bates’ senior midfielder Will Akie (Dedham, Mass.) owned the face-off "x", winning 13-of-15 face-offs and scooping up five ground balls. Paddock finished the contest with eight saves. The Bobcats were also very efficient on clears, with 21 on 23 attempts.

The Scots were led by Kirkaldy, MacIntosh, and Utz who each had two goals.

The Bobcats travel to Trinity College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
