LEWISTON, Maine -- Harper Cullen netted five goals to lead Trinity College past Bates College in a NESCAC men's lacrosse game Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.
The Bantams (9-3, 4-3 NESCAC) led 5-4 at the half and opened up a 9-4 lead in the third quarter en route to their third straight win and fifth in the past six games.
Connor Hustava added three goals and an assist for Trinity, while Rob Mountain and Kevin Looby had a goal and an assist apiece.
Rory Cosgrove (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored two goals with one assist to lead the Bates (3-8, 1-6 NESCAC) offense. Senior Tyler Moore (North Andover, Mass.) also scored twice, while senior Les Wade (Randolph, N.J.) had a goal and one assist.
Both goalies had strong games, with Trinity's Graham Fadden making 13 saves and Bates first-year Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) collecting 15.
Trinity's Connor Wells had a major impact on the game, winning 13 of 21 faceoffs and collecting a game-high 12 ground balls. Sophomore Pat Jackson (Durham, N.H.) led Bates in ground balls with six.
Trinity converted three of five extra-man opportunities, including three of four before the Bantams were called for their first penalty of the game late in the third quarter. Bates converted one of two EMOs.
Trinity went up 2-1 on an EMO goal by Cullen in the first quarter, but Moore answered with two straight goals for a 3-2 Bates lead early in the second quarter. Cullen evened the game at 3-3, and the Bantams retook the lead with a man-up goal by Looby, then extended it to 5-3 when Looby fed Mountain with 1:47 left in the half. Cosgrove chipped at the lead with an unassisted tally wth 36 seconds left in the half.
Trinity opened the third quarter with four straight goals. Cullen started it less than two mintues in on a feed by Art Schweitzer, and Zachary Trudeau scored unassisted a minute later. Cullen and Hustava scored back-to-back goals in the sixth minute of the period to make it 9-4 Trinity. Hustava then sandwiched Cosgrove's second goal with his second and third tallies of the game to make it 10-5 with 4:25 left in the third.
Junior David Barrett (Chatham, N.J.) scored on a Cosgrove assist with 52 seconds left in the third on Bates' first EMO to close the gap to 10-6. Trinity effectively kept the ball from Bates for much of the fourth quarter, adding a score by Hustava to finish the scoring with 9:21 left at 11-6.
Trinity will host Roger Williams on April 15 at 4 p.m.; Bates next plays host to Bowdoin on April 21 at 4:30 p.m.
