Barrett scores hat trick at No. 8 Connecticut College

David Barrett '10 netted three goals against the No. 8 Camels.

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Red-hot Connecticut College moved to 10-0 on Saturday with a 13-8 win over the Bates College men's lacrosse team at Silfen Field.

Bates senior midfielder David Barrett (Chatham, N.J.) had three goals to lead the Bobcats (4-6, 0-6 NESCAC). Junior Rory Cosgrove (Pittsburgh, Pa.) contributed two goals and one assist.

The eighth-ranked Camels moved to 6-0 in NESCAC play. Junior Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) scored three goals and Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) tallied two goals with one assist for the Camels.  Face-off midfielder Brendan Schrader (Annapolis, Md.) won 13-of-19 face-offs while senior defensive midfielder Sean Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) corralled a game-high 10 ground balls for Connecticut College.

Senior Steve Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) and Andrew Berry (Moorestown, N.J.) both scored twice for the Camels. Kevin Nally (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Mike Giambanco (Massapequa, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist for the winning side.

Connecticut College head coach Dave Cornell was pleased with his team’s effort against a strong and well-coached Bates squad that battled for four quarters.

"I was very proud of our guys today," Cornell said. "That was a big game for us and we played very hard for 60 minutes. Bates was a good team and they were very motivated to win. We knew we were going to get their best shot. So I'm very proud of our guys for fighting 60 minutes today."

The Camels built a 3-1 lead after one quarter. In the second, the Camels opened up a 6-2 advantage with 4:27 remaining when Berry dodged a defender from behind the Bates cage to execute a nifty looking wraparound move.

Bates responded with two goals in the closing 1:43 of the half, trimming the lead to 6-4 when first-year Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine) fed Barrett for a goal from the center of the box.

The Camels found some breathing room at the end of the third quarter. Giambanco buried a low shot from the left side with exactly three minutes to go. With 2:25 remaining, Dachille set a pick for Doran, who fired home a runner from the right side of the box and the Camels were on top 10-6 after three.

Hayes tacked on another goal 2:54 into the fourth quarter, wiggling his way free from behind the cage for a shot from point-blank range and the Camels were in control with an 11-6 lead.

The Bobcats pulled to within four on two separate occasions but John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) scored an insurance goal with 1:30 remaining and the hosts were able to hold on for the 13-8 decision.

Sophomore Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) made six saves in the victory for the Camels, while rookie netminder Alex Henrie (Lexington, Mass.) stopped seven shots and collected a team-high four ground balls in his first start for the Bobcats.
