Men's lacrosse tops Keene State in overtime, 11-10

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior David Barrett scored 26 seconds into overtime to lift the Bates College men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 non-conference win over visiting Keene State College on Wednesday in the season opener for both teams.

Bates junior Cody Newman (Montclair, N.J.) won the faceoff to open the overtime period and scooped the ground ball. First-year Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine) received the ball, penetrated from the left wing and pitched to Barrett (Chatham, N.J.) on the right wing. The senior captain fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net for the game-ending score.

With the win, the Bobcats avenged their season-opening 14-7 loss at Keene State a year ago.

Bates broke a 9-9 tie with 36 seconds left in regulation on an unassisted tally by junior Rory Cosgrove (Pittsburgh, Pa.). But the Owls quickly ended the celebrating by tying the game back up at 10-10 with 22 seconds left, when Matt Shairer scooped the ground ball after the faceoff and scored an unassisted tally to send the game into overtime.

The game was very close throughout: only twice did either team build even a two-goal lead, which the Owls did at 3-1 and 9-7.

Shairer and Griffin Meehan scored four goals apiece for the Owls, with Meehan adding in a pair of assists. Jonathan Rodrick tallied a goal and an assist for Keene State.

Both goalies played well. Bates sophomore Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) made 12 saves, while Keene State's Alec Corliss made 13 stops. Bates outshot Keene State by a wide 55-30 margin, but the shots on goals tally was much closer, at 24-22 in Bates' favor.

Barrett, Highland and senior Evan Bagley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) all scored two goals apiece for Bates, with Barrett and Highland adding one assist each. Junior Luke Charest (Freeport, Maine) and senior Nick Sampson (Yarmouth, Maine) both tallied one goal and one assist for the Bobcats.

Kyle Barnett and Jamie LeSage had 10 and nine ground balls, respectively, for the Owls. Scharff led Bates with six ground balls, while Bagley, Sampson and first-year C.J. Schmidt (Franktown, Colo.) added four apiece. Schmidt won five of 11 faceoffs, while Newman won four of nine.

Bates next plays another non-conference game at Lasell College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
