Cosgrove leads men's lacrosse past Southern Maine, 13-6

PORTLAND, Maine -- Senior Rory Cosgrove (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a game-high five goals, including four in the first half, as the Bates men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first half and cruised by the University of Southern Maine, 13-6, in a non-conference match Tuesday night at Memorial Field.

The win was the second straight for the Bobcats who improve to 4-3 overall. The Huskies dropped their second straight to slide to 2-4 overall.

Aiding Cosgrove were sophomore Gary Guinta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and junior Jason Hichborn (Yarmouth, Maine) with two goals apiece, and senior Luke Charest (Freeport, Maine), who had a goal and three assists. Junior goalie Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) started and played the first half, making four saves. Four reserves split the second half in the Bates goal.

Sophomores Mark White and Marc Stannard and freshman Dylan Bousquet-Smith each scored two goals for Southern Maine.  Sophomore goalie Kyle Dussault stopped 15 shots.

Guinta and sophomore C.J. Schmidt (Franktown, Colo.) scored in the opening seven minutes to give Bates a 2-0 lead. Cosgrove and Hichborn found the net in the final six minutes to double the lead after one quarter.

Cosgrove was on target from the wing, scoring three of Bates' four second-quarter goals. Charest picked up his lone goal in the quarter, and the Bobcats were up 8-0 at the break.

After Hichborn made it 9-0 two minutes into the third quarter, the Huskies scored four consecutive goals to get into the game. Stannard had the first and last goals in the run with White and Bousquet-Smith found the net in between.

The Bobcats quickly dispelled the notion of a Huskies' comeback as Cosgrove and Guinta scored 19 seconds apart in the opening 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to make it 11-4. The teams traded goals over the final eight minutes for the 13-6 final tally.

Bates will be on the road on Saturday (1 p.m.) playing at NESCAC rival Amherst College. The game can be followed online via Live Video Webcast.
