HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates College junior defender Kevin Helm has been named to the 2011 NESCAC Men's Lacrosse All-Conference Second Team, announced Thursday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. With three defenders being named to the All-NESCAC First and Second Teams, Helm has essentially been recognized as one of the top six defenders in the conference.
Helm (Norwell, Mass.), a team captain, led the Bobcats in ground balls this season, with 50. In the four games Bates played this season in which caused turnovers were recorded, Helm was credited with 13, eight more than any other player on the Bobcats. Among his finest performances were collecting five ground balls in a 12-7 win over Wesleyan; six caused turnovers and four ground balls in a 9-5 loss to Connecticut College; and six ground balls and two caused turnovers in a 6-5 loss to Trinity.
Helm's recognition in lacrosse comes after he also posted a terrific season with the Bates football team. A starting linebacker for all eight games of the 2010 football season, Helm tied for first in the conference in tackles, with 80, including a NESCAC-best 53 solo tackles. His seven tackles for a loss ranked seventh in the league. Helm was named NESCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 14.
