Men's lacrosse coasts by Nor'easters for 10-4 win

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's lacrosse team raced out to a 6-0 lead after one period and coasted to a 10-4 non-conference victory over the University of New England on Wednesday at Garcelon Field, in a game originally scheduled to be played at UNE.
Bates sophomore Dan Hines (Manchester, Mass.) scored back-to-back unassisted goals at the end of the first quarter, after assisting on first-year Paul Donovan's (Norwell, Mass.) first collegiate goal, to lead the Bobcats (2-1) with three points. Sophomore Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine) also scored two goals, including the game-opening tally 63 seconds into the game. First-year Thomas Livingston (Concord, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for Bates.
Bates first-year Wylie Leabo (Belmont, Mass.) scored on an assist by senior George O'Connor (Loudonville, N.Y.) 19 seconds into the second quarter to make it 7-0 Bates.
The Nor'easters (1-1) got on the board with 12:39 to go in the second, taking advantage of a Bates penalty for a man-up goal by sophomore Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.), his third of the year, on a feed by senior Michael Woods (Kittery Point, Maine). The teams traded even-strength goals for an 8-2 Bates lead, but both teams were scoreless for the final 8:40 of the half.
The Nor'easters outscored Bates 2-0 in the third quarter despite a 9-5 edge in shots by Bates, as junior goalie Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) made four of his eight saves in the game. UNE first-year Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.H.) scored an unassisted tally with 13:10 left in the third, and added a man-up goal, his fourth score of the season, on the fourth assist of the season by senior Luke DiFiore (Gloucester, Mass.), closing the gap to 8-4 with 2:32 left in the third quarter.
Bates reasserted itself in the fourth quarter, shutting out UNE for the period while getting unassisted goals by Highland and sophomore Torben Noto (Portland, Ore.), the latter coming with 58.8 seconds to go, closing out the scoring at 10-4.
Bates won 12 of 18 faceoffs, as junior Harri Kim (Woodbridge, Conn.) won 6 of 9, senior captain Cody Newman (Montclair, N.J.) won 5 of 8 and sophomore C.J. Schmidt (Franktown, Colo.) won his lone attempt. Bates had a 36-23 edge in shots taken, and a 45-35 advantage in ground balls.
Bates junior Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) made eight saves in goal. Also scoring for the Bobcats were junior Reed Brown (Brunswick, Maine) and first-year Frank Tumminello (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
Bates opens NESCAC play at Middlebury on Saturday at 1 p.m. UNE hosts Southern Maine on Thursday at 4 p.m.
