LEWISTON, Maine -- Sam Hargrove scored three goals to lead Williams College to a 5-1 NESCAC victory over the Bates College men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Garcelon Field.
Williams (2-4, 1-3 NESCAC) notched its first conference win of the season, while Bates dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the NESCAC.
Hargrove scored the only goal for either team in the first half, then put the Ephs on top 2-0 just six seconds into the third quarter, out of the opening faceoff.
Steven Kiesel made it 3-0 with 9:20 left in the quarter before Bates first-year Gil Cassagne (Dallas, Texas) put Bates on the scoreboard with 8:14 to go in the quarter.
Hargrove gave Williams its three-goal lead back with his third goal of the game, and team-best 13th of the season, on an assist by Will Stewart.
Mike Ryan added an unassisted tally halfway through the fourth quarter, the only goal in the game's final 20 minutes.
Tucker Drayton and Evan Dedominicis both collected five ground balls for the Ephs.
First-year Jack Strain (Montclair, N.J.) gathered a team-high four ground balls for Bates.
Bates won 6 out of 10 faceoffs in the game, outshot the Ephs by a 34-27 margin and by a 17-13 margin in shots on goal.
Sean Dougherty played an outstanding game in goal for Williams, with 16 saves. Bates senior Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) made two saves and allowed one goal in the first half; sophomore Charlie Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) manned the pipes in the second half and made six saves while allowing four goals.
