LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior two-sports standout Kevin Helm received the first All-America honor of his outstanding career on Wednesday, with Honorable Mention laurels on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association 2012 Division III All-America team.
Helm (Norwell, Mass.), a two-time All-NESCAC defender, becomes Bates' fourth All-American in men's lacrosse, and the first since defender Ryan O'Connor '06 in 2006.
Helm, a First-Team All-NESCAC selection in 2012 and a Second Team All-NESCAC pick in 2011, led a Bates defense that ranked seventh in the NESCAC in goals-against average, at 8.12 per game. A physical and disruptive force in the back, Helm led the Bobcats with 19 caused turnovers and collected 30 ground balls. He also surprised opponents this year by scoring his second career goal and adding the first two assists of his career.
A true two-sport star at Bates, Helm was also a First Team Defense selection at linebacker this past fall on the 2011 All-NESCAC Football Team, after leading the league in solo tackles for the second straight year.
Earlier this month, both Helm and first-year faceoff specialist Mac Jackson were named to the NESCAC All-Conference and NEILA All-New England Division III teams.
