BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin junior Dan Hanley scored the game-winning goal with 3:40 remaining to end the Bates men's lacrosse team's three-game win streak and give the Polar Bear men's lacrosse team its first conference win of the season, 12-11, on Wednesday evening at Ryan Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-2 (1-2 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 3-3 (2-2 NESCAC). Bates, who took a 11-5 win in Lewiston last spring, was looking to beat Bowdoin in consecutive meetings for the first time.
Bates was paced by three goals from sophomore Jack Strain (Montclair, N.J.). Sophomore Conor Henrie (Lexington, Mass.), junior Will Gilkeson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and sophomore Nick Ford (Columbus, Ohio) had two goals apiece for the Bobcats, with Ford adding an assist. Seniors Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine) and Kyle Starr (Concord, N.H.) had two assists apiece.. Franklin Reis sparked the Bowdoin offense with five assists to go with a goal. Will Wise had three goals while Hanley, Connor O'Toole and Peter Reuter had two each.
The match featured several runs by each team, with a 4-0 Bates surge that overlapped the first and second quarter giving the visitors to a 6-3 lead. Bowdoin used a 3-0 run later in the frame to tie the contest at 7-7, but a score by Bobcat first-year Jack Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) before intermission gave the Bobcats a 8-7 lead at the break.
Bowdoin dominated the third quarter, scoring all three goals in the period, and added a marker from O'Toole to open a 11-8 lead early in the fourth. But Bates answered with a 3-0 run of its own to tie the game on a goal from Ford with 4:32 on the clock.
The Bobcats won the ensuing face-off but immediately turned the ball over. Hanley scooped the ground ball and, after a sustained possession, took a feed from Reis behind the cage and deposited the game-winner with 3:40 to go.
Christopher Williamson made the lead stand for Bowdoin, and finished with seven saves and four ground balls for the game. Mac Caputi had a game-high five ground balls for the Polar Bears while Rob Talcott went 13-26 on the face-off dot.
Junior Charlie Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) made 12 saves in goal for the Bobcats as sophomore Mac Jackson (Hood River, Ore.; 6-13) and junior Paul Donovan (Norwell, Mass.; 7-13) split time working face-offs for Bates. Senior Andrew Berry (Westwood, Mass.) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Bates defense.
Bates will travel to play at Trinity at 1pm this Saturday.
