LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College men's lacrosse set a team record and notched the second-most goals in a game in Division III this season as the Bobcats defeated Husson University, 27-0, on Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.
The Bobcats (2-3) eclipsed the previous team record of 24 goals which the team scored in 1992 against Curry. Bates scored 20 or more goals in a game for the first time since a 23-4 win at Southern Maine on March 26, 2007.
Only Denison University (6-0), which beat Mount Saint Joseph 29-1 earlier this season on February 14, has scored more goals in a game this year in Division III.
The hosts outshot the visiting Eagles (0-2) 64-19 in the game, including a 49-5 margin in the first half. Bates won 22-of-30 faceoffs, taking 16-of-19 in the first half, as the team built an 18-0 lead midway through the contest.
Bates gained an 8-0 lead after the first quarter as Allard notched two goals, and junior Jack Strain (Montclair, N.J.), first-year Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine), senior Wylie Leabo (Belmont, Mass.), junior Evan Chen (Katonah, N.Y.), first-year Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), and junior Steven Hild (West Hartford, Conn.) each recorded single tallies.
First-year Andrew Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) charted the second quarter's first goal, and the Bobcats tacked on another nine goals in the period including scores from sophomore Charlie Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa.) and junior Matt McReddie (Rye, N.Y.).
As snow began to fall in the third quarter, Bates added another eight goals to their total to take a 26-0 edge through three periods. Senior Will Gilkeson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), junior Reed Lewallen (Portland, Ore.), senior Colin Lyne (Beverly, Mass.), first-year Jake Walsh (Baltimore, Md.), and first-year Jack Adons (Doylestown, Pa.) each registered his first goal in the game in the period. Riley scored the team's lone goal in the fourth quarter.
Bates senior Charlie Kazarian (Providence, R.I.), sophomore Joe Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), and senior Doug Steinberg (Weston, Conn.) combined in the shout, making two, three, and four saves respectively.
Husson senior goalie Eric Lund (Mansfield, Mass.) stopped 12 shots while first-year Tom Lepage (Lewiston, Maine) compiled two saves.
Next, Bates returns to NESCAC action with a home date against Williams on Saturday at 1 p.m. while Husson hosts Lyndon State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
