Hot Cardinals edge men's soccer in defensive showdown

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Alan Ashenfelter's early goal stood up as the game-winner as Wesleyan University defeated Bates College 1-0 in a NESCAC men's soccer game on Saturday.

The host Cardinals (7-4, 4-3 NESCAC) received their third game-winner of the year from Ashenfelter, who got behind the defense in the game's 10th minute after a head ball by Kyle Nuland and was able to draw out Bates senior goalie Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) and shoot left-footed past him.

Schleicher had two saves for the Bobcats (3-7-1, 0-6-1 NESCAC), who will host Endicott College in a non-league contest on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Jamie Hiteshew had four saves for the shutout, the red-hot Cardinals' fifth in their past seven game, all wins.
