Men's soccer claims 4-0 victory at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats men's soccer team scored three goals in a five-minute span midway through the first half en route to a 4-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field in Gorham.

The win snapped a four-match winless skid (0-3-1) for the Bobcats, who improve to 2-5-1 overall.  The Huskies dip to 6-4-1 overall.  The Bobcats have won the last 11 meetings, and are unbeaten in the last 15 (11-0-4) between the two sides.

Senior Patrick Grater (Mystic, Conn.) put Bates on the scoreboard in the 24th minute with an unassisted goal.  Senior Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.) made it 2-0 in the 27th minute with another unassisted goal.  Freshman Dustin DiGregorio (Boxford, Mass.) picked up the third goal in the 29th minute out of a scramble in front of the USM goal.

The final goal of the match came in the final minute as sophomore Ben Lajoie (Hopkinton, N.H.) buried a shot off an assist from freshman Dae Ro Lee (Yongin, South Korea).

Senior goalies Robert Wesley-Munro (Walpole, Mass.) and Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) split the goalkeeping duties for Bates.  Wesley-Munro played the first half and recorded one save.  Schleicher played the second half and was credited with two saves. 

Sophomore David Kreps played the first 85 minutes for Southern Maine and had one save.  Freshman Kevin Mulkerin played the final five minutes making one save.

Bates had a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 10-1 margin in corner kicks.

Bates hits the road on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) for a NESCAC match at Williams College.
