Men's soccer defeated by Amherst
LEWISTON, Maine -- Taylor Downs figured in all three goals scored as Amherst College defeated Bates College 3-0 in a physical NESCAC men's soccer game Saturday at Russell Street Field.
Amherst stays unbeaten at 4-0 overall, 2-0 in conference, while Bates drops to 0-2 (0-2 NESCAC).
Senior Kevin Dolan (Peabody, Mass.) struck first for the Lord Jeffs, settling the ball before lining a shot from outside the penalty area past Bates goalie Robert Wesley-Munro (Walpole, Mass.) and into the upper right, near corner of the goal in the fourth minute of the first half. Downs, a senior from Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., was credited the assist.
Downs assisted senior John Kneeland (Holden, Mass.) with a cross that Kneeland one-timed into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute.
Downs scored a goal himself with under 14 minutes left in the game, volleying a free kick from Amherst's half of the field by junior Rory O'Connor (West Boylston, Mass.) past Bates senior goalie Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.), who was a halftime substitution for the Bobcats.
Wesley-Munro made two saves in the first half, and Schleicher made three in the second.
The game included 26 total fouls and five yellow cards, three for Bates and two for Amherst.
Bates next plays its first non-league game of the season on Wednesday at UMaine-Farmington (4:30 p.m.).
