Men's soccer knocks MIT from ranks of the unbeaten, 3-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The men's soccer team scored three times in the second half and turned in a stellar defensive effort in a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten MIT in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Russell Street Field.

Bates raised its overall record to 6-5 on the season, while MIT, who is ranked fifth in New England, fell to 12-1-1, in an intense battle that featured 36 combined fouls for the game.

After a scoreless first half, Bates increased the offensive pressure. First-year forward Chris Okano (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied the game's first goal, his third of the season, at 54:29 mark. Okano was assisted by junior Jonathan Lobozzo (New Gloucester, Maine), who crossed from the right wing right to Okano in front of the MIT goal.

Bates added unassisted goals by junior back Patrick King (Gorham, Maine), his second goal of the season, in the 73rd minute, and by sophomore Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.), who tallied his team-high sixth goal of the season with nine minutes to play.

Bates first-year goalkeeper Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) turned back 6 shots for his third shutout of the season. MIT goalie Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, Pa.) recorded four saves.

Bates next plays a NESCAC game at Middlebury College on Saturday at 1 p.m.; MIT will host Coast Guard on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
