Williams' late rally defeats men's soccer in NESCAC quarterfinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College men's soccer team overcame a one-goal halftime deficit with three unanswered scores, two of which came in the games final five minutes, to defeat visiting No. 5 seed Bates College  3-1 in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Championship on Sunday.

The win improves the Ephs to 8-5-2 as they advance to the conference semifinals, while the loss ends the Bobcats' season at 9-6.

Bates took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, when a long pass by sophomore Tyler Dewdney (Meriden, N.H.) reached a wide-open Chris Okano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and the first-year forward knocked it past Eph keeper Andrew Graham (1 save).

The Ephs nearly evened things up just before the half, when a perfectly placed cross from Alex Kramer found Jay Ingram in stride right in front of the Panther net, but an aggressive move by Bates first-year goalie Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) pushed the shot wide.

The Ephs stepped up their offensive pressure in the second half, and earned a game-tying penalty kick by Sam Empson in the 67th minute after a hard tackle in the Bates penalty area.

Each team franticly fought to prolong their season for the rest of the way. With just under five minutes remaining, Empson crossed to Peter Gordon, who headed it over the top of Watts, giving the Ephs their first lead at 2-1. Gordon then converted a Pierre Meloty-Kapella cross less than two minutes later to seal the 3-1 victory for the Ephs.

Watts made 9 saves for the Bobcats. Playing in their final soccer game for Bates were seniors Oliver Fadly (Lexington, Mass.), Nate Kellogg (Natick, Mass.) and Clark Winchell (Waltham, Mass.).
