Men's soccer blasts Terriers, 3-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team outshot Thomas College 40-3 en route to a 3-1 non-conference victory in 40-degree weather on mucky Russell Street Field.

Three different players scored for Bates: first-year Ethan Hirshberg (Concord, N.H.), junior Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.) and junior Tim Molnar (Rocky River, Ohio), while Thomas senior Tim Costa (Pelham, N.H.) netted the Terriers' tally.

Bates raises its overall record to 3-5-2, while the visiting Terriers fall to 5-7-1.

All the game's scoring occurred in the first half, starting with Hirshberg's third goal in the past seven games. Seven minutes into the game, Hirshberg got loose along the right baseline and fired off a shot that bounced off a Thomas defender. Hirshberg was able to collect the ball again and poke it past Thomas senior goalie James Leibowitz (South China, Maine) and inside the far left post for a 1-0 lead.

Costa evened the game at 1-1 in the 27th minute, on the Terriers' first shot of the game. Andrew Pelletier's pass found a streaking Costa down the middle of the field, and Costa finished off a one-on-one with Bates sophomore goalie Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) with a shot inside the near left post.

Bates got the lead back in the 37th minute when sophomore Ben Kitendaugh's (Wayland, Mass.) pass dropped in to Jackson, who made a move and drilled a shot from the top of the penalty area past Leibowitz.

With 2:17 left in the half, Bates made it 3-1 when junior Chris LaBrecque (Falmouth, Maine) threw in to Molnar, who blasted a low shot through traffic and inside the near left post.

Leibowitz had 15 saves in a very strong performance, while Watts had one save for Bates.

Bates will play at Wesleyan on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
