Jackson's goal in OT sends men's soccer past Trinity, 2-1

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute of action to lead the Bates College men's soccer team to a 2-1 NESCAC win over Trinity College on Saturday afternoon. With their first conference win, the Bobcats improve to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the league. The Bantams fall to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC.

Bates got the scoring started late in the first half with a goal from junior back David Wood (Contoocook, N.H.), assisted by sophomore John Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine). Murphy kicked a corner kick that caromed back to him. He followed with a cross that connected with Wood on a header that found the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Bantams evened the score at 1-1 early in the second frame after junior forward Dan Mayernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) buried a shot in the upper left corner of the net.

The teams stayed even through the end of regulation before Jackson was able to finish the game in the first overtime period. Senior Tyler Mehegan (Duxbury, Mass.) took the ball up through the flank and delivered a pass into the box through the seam between two defenders, where Jackson drilled it from about 15 yards out for his second game-winning goal of the season.

Bates junior goalkeeper Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) made 10 saves for the win, while Trinity junior goalkeeper Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) stopped 11 shots on the afternoon.

The Bobcats next play at Thomas College in a non-conference game on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
