Men's soccer in NESCAC playoffs after overtime loss in season finale

Patrick Jackson '11 scored twice to finish the regular season with a team-high six goals.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior captain Patrick Jackson scored two goals on Senior Day, but Colby escaped with a 3-2 win in overtime on Friday at Russell Street Field. Nate Tolman broke away from three Bates defenders to score the game-winning goal 7:24 into the first overtime period, giving Colby the win in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Colby (7-6-1, 4-5-0 NESCAC) earned the fifth seed in the NESCAC Championship and will play at No. 4 Amherst on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Despite the loss, Bates (5-8-1, 2-6-1 NESCAC) finished in a three-way tie for eighth place in the conference, but earned the eighth and final seed in the NESCAC Championship, and will play at top-seeded Bowdoin in the tournament quarterfinals on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be a rematch of an exciting 0-0 tie between the Bobcats and Polar Bears in Lewiston earlier this season.

Bates, Connecticut College and Trinity all finished the regular season with the same number of points. In head-to-head competition, each team was 1-1.  Each team had the same winning percentage and each team had the same number of conference wins.  In record against the top 4 teams, Bates was 1-2-1, Connecticut College was 0-3-1 and Trinity was 0-4-0.  So, Bates earns the No. 8 seed.

Bates carried play for most of the first half, with a 16-6 advantage in shots, including several gems of scoring opportunities. But the Bobcats had to accept a 1-1 tie at intermission. In the 15th minute, sophomore back Griffin Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) lofted a towering free kick from near midfield to a spot near the face of Colby's goal. Jackson (Durham, N.H.) put the hosts on the scoreboard with a perfectly timed leap and header into the high left corner of the goal.

Colby junior Peter Randall (Medford, Mass.), playing in his first game back from injury, evened the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute on a feed from junior Jeremy Lactrupp (Stowe, Vt.).

The Mules then went ahead in the 59th minute. Sophomore Nick Aubin (Simsbury, Conn.) received the ball near the Bates goal and with room to shoot, but his shot was deflected by Bates defender David Wood (Contoocook, N.H.). The carom came right back to Aubin, who cashed in with a shot that glanced off of Bates sophomore Ryan March (Concord, N.H.) and into the upper right corner of the net.

But Bates answered minutes later, in the 71st minute, thanks to another Jackson header, this time a forceful redirection of sophomore John Murphy's (Yarmouth, Maine) corner kick from near Colby's far goalpost.

Bates put more pressure on the Colby goal in the final minutes of regulation, outshooting the Mules 6-3 in the last 18 minutes. But regulation ended with the score 2-2.

In the 98th minute, Tolman was able to break free and dribble past two Bates defenders to the outside, then cut in and past Bates junior goalie Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) for a tap-in goal that ended the game with 2:36 on the clock.

Watts had four saves for Bates, while junior Ben Joslin (Chicago, Ill.) had nine saves for the Mules.
