LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 3 nationally ranked Williams College scored a 3-0 NESCAC victory over the Bates College men's soccer team on Saturday to stay undefeated on the season.
The Ephs (6-0-2, 3-0-2 NESCAC) got on top in the 14th minute as Colin Ainsworth scored his first goal of the season, knocking in a pass from Charles Romero in a scramble in front of the Bates net.
Williams outshot Bates 14-3 in the opening half, but carried just the 1-0 lead into intermission. The Ephs made it 2-0 shortly after the break, as Kiel Bonhomme scored an unassisted tally 1:57 into the second half, his third goal of the season. Romero made it 3-0 with under four minutes left in the game, streaking in from midfield on a one-man break and pushing the ball past advancing Bates junior goalie Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) for his team-high fifth goal of the year.
Watts made 12 saves in a strong effort, while Peter Morrell made three saves for Williams, which outshot Bates by a 28-9 final margin.
Bates (3-5-1, 1-3-1 NESCAC) will play host to Amherst in a rare midweek NESCAC matchup, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Williams plays at conference foe Trinity tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
