WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore John Murphy scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Bates College men's soccer team picked up its second straight win on Wednesday with a 4-1 non-conference victory over Thomas College.
Bates began the scoring at the 19:30 mark of the first half, when Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) found the back of the net for the first time this season on an assist from senior captain Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.). Three minutes later Bates scored off a Murphy corner kick, with first-year back Dan Remillard (Hanover, N.J.) heading the ball past Terriers goalie Mikkail Crockwell and into the goal.
Bates added another goal before the half was over, as senior Tyler Mehegan (Duxbury, Mass.) assisted first-year Ethan Kass (New York, N.Y.) for Kass's first career goal to send the visitors into intermission with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Thomas outshot Bates 9-6 in the second half, looking to get back into the game. Michael Greengarten scored the only goal for Thomas off his own rebound in the 71st minute. But Bates bumped the lead back to three goals less than three minutes later, when Murphy returned the favor to Jackson for his second assist of the game and Jackson's third goal of the season.
Crockwell recorded four saves for Thomas, while Bates junior Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) also made four saves. Junior Brian Goldberg (New York, N.Y.) tended goal for Bates for the final 17 minutes.
Bates plays at NESCAC rival Tufts on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
