SOMERVILLE, Mass. -- After a foul in the 71st minute, senior Ben Green netted a 25-yard free kick to give Tufts University the lead and eventual victory, 2-1, over the Bates College men's soccer team in NESCAC's action on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.
Bates hosts Southern Maine at 4 pm on Tuesday. The game will feature live video streaming at First Team Broadcasting's Bates website.
Early in the contest, the Jumbos had a chance for a lead as Franco Silva put a header just wide of the Bates net. About 15 minutes later in the 17th minute, the Bobcats cashed in on their opportunity as sophomore John Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) dribbled past the defense and went one-on-one against the Tufts keeper for the 1-0 advantage. It was Murphy's second goal in as many games.
While pressuring the Bates keeper in the 34th minute, Green fired a shot that was blocked in front of the net, but it took a Jumbo bounce to the right side of the box and Sam Atwood slipped it inside the post to tie the score. The tally was the first of Atwood's collegiate career.
Tufts thought they had taken the lead in the 39th minute as Ron Coleman put one in the net, but he was ruled offside. It remained 1-1 into the half with each keeper being credited with a save.
Bates almost took the lead back as well in the 59th minute when freshman Dan Remillard (Hanover, N.J.) was in front of the net, and put the ball over the reach of Tufts keeper Alan Bernstein, but it hit off the crossbar and carried over the net.
Green got the call for the free kick in the 71st minute. He hooked it by Bates' junior keeper Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) for his third tally of the year.
The Jumbo defense held off the Bobcats late as they made a late flurry. Bernstein finished the day with two saves helping to extend the Tufts winning streak to three games. Tufts is now 2-1-1 in the NESCAC and 4-2-1 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 1-2-1 in conference and 3-3-1 overall.
