Bantam forward the difference in men's soccer game at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sophomore forward Julian Gocksch scored the game's only two goals to lead Trinity College to a 2-0 win over the visiting Bates College men's soccer team in NESCAC men's soccer action on Sunday.

Trinity improves to 1-1-2 overall and remains unbeaten in the NESCAC at 1-0-2, while the Bobcats drop to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the league.

After a scoreless opening half that saw Trinity hold a 10-2 edge shooting and attempt all four of the corner kicks before the break, Gocksch scored the only goal Trinity needed from Graham Goldstein 2:02 after intermission, with a volley off a corner kick to set up Gocksch.

Trinity senior Dan Mayernick provided the assist on Gocksch's insurance tally in the 82nd minute, while the Bantam defense continued its strong play with just four shots allowed in the second half.

Bates senior co-captain and goalkeeper Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) finished with four saves, while Bantam senior captain Grant Schonberg earned a shutout with three stops.

Bates senior Chris Okano (Los Angeles, Calif.), junior Ethan Hirshberg (Concord, N.H.) and first-year Nick Ford (Columbus, Ohio) all put shots on goal for the Bobcats.

Bates plays its Alumni Game this Saturday, during Homecoming Weekend, at 11 a.m. on Russell Street Field. The Bobcats then play host to Thomas College next Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. The game can be followed online via live video webcast and by live stats.
