LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates junior Ethan Hirshberg scored both goals as the Bobcat men's soccer team ended Husson University's four-game win streak with a 2-1 non-conference victory on Wednesday at Russell Street Field.

Bates took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Hirshberg (Concord, N.H.) gathered first-year Nick Ford's (Columbus, Ohio) kickout pass and lined up a beautiful arcing shot over Husson goalie Mason Smith.

Husson (7-5-1) evened the score at 1-1 in the third minute of the second half, with Philip Frost's unassisted tally.

Bates (3-6-0) regained the lead 12 minutes later, when sophomore Ethan Kass's (New York, N.Y.) entry pass to Hirshberg was snuck through a defender's legs, before Hirshberg wheeled around and got his foot on a low shot under Smith's reach.

Bates controlled play for most of the first half, building a 12-2 advantage in shots through 45 minutes. Junior John Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) led the team in shots with 11 and helped to keep the pressure on the Eagles defense throughout the game. But it was Hirshberg who broke through for the Bobcats at the 16:47 mark, when he took a pass from Ford just inside the 18-yard box and finished with a arcing shot that top-spinned past Husson goalkeeper Mason Smith. Bates took the one goal lead into halftime.

Husson picked up the pace of their game in the second half and quickly netted the tying goal at the 47:16 mark. Husson first-year Philip Frost was able to clean up a loose ball just inside the penalty box that was placed by an impressive flip throw-in from teammate Andrew Austin. After a few bounces in the box, Frost was able to place a foot on the ball and drive it by Goldberg.

The teams battled evenly for the majority of the half but the stalemate was broken at 59:20 of the game, when Hirshberg took a pass from Kass, dribbled through traffic in front of the net and as he was falling to the ground he was able to get a shot off that gave the Bobcats the lead.

As the minutes waned in the second half, Husson was able to mount numerous attacks and pressured the Bates goal right up until the final horn, but the Bobcat defense thwarted all attempts and left the field with the 2-1 victory.

Senior Brian Goldberg (New York, N.Y.) made two saves in the Bates win. Smith collected eight saves for Husson.

The Bobcats will look to pick up their first conference win on Saturday at Connecticut College, with a 1:30 p.m. starting time. Bates returns to campus the following day for a Sunday 2 p.m. NESCAC game against Tufts. The Tufts game can be followed online via live video webcast and by live stats.
